Special Dance/Acro Training

look good, move good, feel good... you're healthy.

Those who dance, often find themselves at a point where competition requires extra dance training.  With this extra dance training chronic strain injuries can occur as well as changes in energy levels.  Many dancers perform different types of dance; jazz, ballet, tap, acrobatics, hip hop and modern all in one week.  This increases the wear on the dancer's body and increases the requirement for strength, flexibility and coordination.

Quite often dancers are doing 10-20 hours per week which makes it difficult to maintain good strength and power as well as energy.  In addition dancers are predisposed to the following areas of injury:  1. Knees  2. Ankles  3. Low back   With these areas of the body we see injuries varying from post patellar injury to ligament strain to muscle strain.   Most, if not all injuries in dance are preventable.  Appropriate moves, strength training specifically for dance and good nutrition for dance are the keys.

How do we do this?

  •   1-2 times per week for 1 hour exercise prescription specific to dance can increase your performance and prevent injuries    almost  immediately.  This is true because skilled dancers have excellent motor patterns for movement.  Their body's ability to remember a movement and duplicate it is excellent.
  •  Assess all muscle strengths and range about each major joint - knees, hips, spine, shoulders, elbows
  •  Check previous/current problems areas that may be related to muscle imbalances; a very common issue with dancers.
  •  Assess aerobic (long term energy) and anaerobic (short term energy)
  •  Discuss performance nutrition for dancing and health
  •  * It is very important to retain the grace and flexibility that the dancer has attained.
  •  Recreation dancers are just as likely (if not more) to need exercise training for dance
